You Are God's Word!

Isaiah 55:11
so shall My word be that goes forth out from My mouth: it shall not return to me void, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

Andrew Garcia

Part of the unspoken code among the settlers of the American West was that a man always kept his word. That explains why Andrew Garcia made a 1,300-mile trek in 1879 to pay a debt. In September of the previous year he had bought supplies in Bozeman, Montana, to hunt buffalo. The 10 pack-mules, ammunition, food, and gear cost him $300 more than he had, so a merchant loaned him the rest. He promised to pay it back by January 1.

The winter snows came early that year, however, and Garcia couldn't get back to Bozeman. His travels took him through Colorado and down into New Mexico. Finally, a year later, he headed back to Bozeman. "Don't bother," his buddies told him. But Garcia believed in keeping his word, so he returned and paid the debt.

In Hispanic culture, the word "macho" simply means male, and a true man is someone who carries respect, responsibility and honor. To be a true man in the Americas in pre-Columbian times meant that you had earned the respect of the "huehues," or the elders. It required that you be honorable and a man of your word. It meant respecting sacred things and people, and that included women. (excerpt from Deconstructing Machismo/Chronicle Features 1997)

This idea of keeping one's word is not new, although it is all but forgotten in modern times. It was true in the days of Abraham, and King David, and Jesus. It has always been true for God. God's word is His bond, His integrity.

Hebrews 4:12
"for the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joint and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

There are several things you need to know about the word of God:

  1. Its alive (quick). The life of God is in it! Your life is affected immediately for it runs very swiftly to your aid (Psalm 147:15)
  2. Its powerful. Whenever God speaks there are always results! God never speaks without results.
  3. Its sharp (piercing, cleansing). God's word convicts. It will bring things to light in your life and will transform you! Your life will never be the same again once you are born-again through the power of His word.
  4. Its cutting (dividing). God's word will cut the stuff out of your life that shouldn't be there. It will produce faith so that you can receive everything God has for you!
  5. Its revealing (discerning). The word of God will reveal your real self to you. It doesn't matter where you've been or what you've done, God's word will show you who you are and where you're going!

When Jesus was on the earth, He showed us what God's word could do - heal the sick, open blind eyes, raise the dead and cast out devils. He spoke and it happened. He KNEW who he was!

Do you remember in Genesis 1:3 when God spoke and said, "Light BE!" and it became? It started the whole ball rolling, or should I say 'world' rolling? His word is so powerful that it gave life to itself. Well, God spoke my name back then, too. He said, "Mary, BE, in 1950" And so I was.

What's even better, He spoke YOUR name before the foundation of the world too and said, "( your name ) BE!" and that word hit a speck of earth in whatever year you were born and you came into existence. We are God's word just as surely as Jesus is God's word. And once we realize who we are, then we are empowered to do the very same things Jesus did! Because Jesus is in us.

Actually, THE word Himself, Jesus, came to literally show us how the word of God accomplishes what He has sent it to do, no matter what! "so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth: it shall not return to me void (without producing any effect, useless), but it shall accomplish that which I please and purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it." Did you ever see the Indiana Jones movies? In the second movie, Indy's father is shot and Indy has to find the "living water" to help him. After going through several dangerous tests, Indy comes to an opening in the mountain. On the other side of a large, deep cavern he sees another doorway. But how can he cross over? Must he jump and possibly fall to his death? The hero closes his eyes, takes a deep breath and steps out - and his foot hits something solid but invisible. Its a camouflaged bridge! Its not until he steps out that it is revealed.

You are the same way, woman of God! It is not until you STEP out and believe what God says about you that you will be revealed as the word of God for those around you! Go ahead - believe, receive and begin to act as if the word of God is true; as you do so, it will become true for you!
