Understanding SalvationYou see, God created mankind to be like Him, in His image, full of dominion and power and peace and love. In the story of Adam and Eve, mankind fell for satan's lies and disobeyed God. Actually, it wasn't just the disobedience - it was that they did not believe God when He said, 'don't eat of this one tree or you will die'. Eve hadn't been created yet when God told Adam about the tree. So Eve got it secondhand and unfortunately listened to the voice of the enemy and ate of it. She then offered it to Adam, who COULD have stopped her! The Bible doesn't say Eve went looking for him. He was right there beside her and he could have put a stop to the devil by exercising his authority. Yet he did not. And so they lost that intimacy with God, the covering of His glory, and the wealth, health and wisdom that goes along with it. And through them, so did we. The minute Adam and Eve made the decision to go against God, they died spiritually. The part of God that was inside them - that was full of power and peace and greatness - separated from them. They were existing, but not alive. However, because God had created them to live forever, it took mankind hundreds of years to die physically with each successive generation living less years than the prior one. When Adam and Eve bowed their knees to the devil and took his word over God's Word, mankind nailed God's Word to that forbidden tree. That's why God's Word had to come and show us exactly what we did. God's Word had to pay the price for unbelief and disobedience so that mankind could once again enjoy eternal life. Everything about God is full of life. His love, His mercy, His grace and favor, His spirit, His Word!
Jesus IS the Word of God. God said "I love you!" and that Word took on flesh just like us and came to live among us. Jesus, too, had to go to a garden and make a decision - whether to do His own will and call thousands of angels to rescue Him, or to do God's will and pay the debt for the sin of mankind - to nail mankind's unbelief and disobedience to another tree, this one on the hill of Calvary. Jesus CHOSE to pay the price so that we could be bought back from the hand of the devil: the bondage to sin, the bondage to sickness, the bondage to poverty, the bondage to death. Jesus is the Righteousness of God; and Righteousness took on the guise of sin so that we could become the righteousness of God! When we accept God's WORD, Jesus, into our heart, we come to a realization that God is real, that He is very active in our lives, that He loves us, and that we need Him as much as He needs us! Suddenly, what was once a book of stories to us, in the deadness of our heart, becomes alive with God Himself! We begin to understand the words themselves - and how much healing and power and wealth and wisdom they contain. We begin to hear God's voice, forgiving us, loving us, guiding us. And we know that we KNOW that we know that no matter what happens, no matter what comes against us, we can overcome; if God is for us, who can dare be against us?
