What "CONFESSION" Really Means

Confession is defined in the dictionary as

  • the act of admitting - as a fault or crime
  • the act of declaring - to make things right; to bear witness
  • the act of revealing - as in 'clearing your conscious' (and)
  • the act of acknowledging - as a truth; something experienced

The Bible talks about four different types of confession as well:

  1. Confession (admission) of sins under the Old Covenant (Testament)

Proverb 28:13 - he who conceals his sin does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy (NIV)

Ps 51:3-4 - For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. (KJV)

Old Testament confession of sin required openness, confession of guilt, and repentance. Under the Mosaic Law it cost the person something to confess. In many cases, their very life. A normal Israelite was required to use a Priest as a mediator for communicating in any way to God, as well as the bringing of a sacrifice for his or her unrighteousness.

The great day of confession for the nation was Yom Kippur (day of coverings or day of atonement). Two goats were required - the sins of the nation being pronounced on one goat that was then led out into a vacant barren land by a chosen man. The innocent goat was slain as a sacrifice, the high priest entering the Holy of Holies with its blood twice (once for himself and once for the nation) and sprinkling blood on the Ark of the Covenant.

  2. Confession (declaration) of Jesus as Lord

The Christian life has been called "the Great Confession" because it is based entirely on confessing Jesus as Lord and believing that He is the Son of God who speaks for God.

Romans 10:9 - that if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.

Matthew 10:32-33 - whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I also confess before my Father which is in heaven; but whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. (KJV)

There are some truths upon which we firmly agree and apart from which we cannot call ourselves "holy brethren" or Christians (as the original Greek says "little anointed ones"). We might disagree over the number of spiritual gifts or the way to receive communion or what songs to sing at church, but there is no margin for error regarding the person and work of Jesus Christ. He is "the Apostle and High Priest of our confession" - the One sent by God, revealing the glory of God and declaring Himself to be the only Redeemer. (Also see Covenant for more background info.)

  3. Confession (revelation) of sins under the New Covenant (Testament)

2 Corinthians 5:17 - therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold! all things are become new.

Acceptance of Jesus, God's Word, into your heart and life washes away your sin of not believing the Word of God and re-creates you. The Holy Spirit comes inside you and stays in you forever. You now have the option of choosing to sin or not. And you won't sin if - you stay in Him, meditate on the Scriptures, fellowship with fellow believers and repent of your previous life. But if you do fall into temptation and sin, God gives you a way out.

1 John 1:9 - if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

James 5:16 - confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another

Repentence is more than confession; more than sorrow for sin or its consequences. The word translated as "repentence" in the New Testament is metanoia, meaning "to turn around", to do a 180 degree turn, to quit walking in the direction you were going and return toward the point from which you originally came. Confession, as honest repentence, means to quit walking away from your Creator and to turn back toward God. God's main purpose in saving you is to have a relationship with you individually. Everything else is secondary: all the benefits, the promises, etc.

  4. Confession as an acknowledgement of faith in Jesus.

The word translated "profession" or "confession" in the King James Version is homologeo which means " to speak the same thing". In the Christian context, it literally means to "speak the same thing that God does".

All the promises of God belong to the believing Christian. Whether we receive them or not is our choice. God has already spoken good things for His children; its the devil who doesn't want you to enjoy them. If you will open your mouth and agree with what God says and claim your rights in Christ Jesus, you will live the abundant life.

2 Corinthians 1:20 - for all the promises of God in Him are yes, and amen, to the glory of God by us.

The word "amen" means to affirm, to say "so be it". But you have got to be saying something to say "amen" to. If you are not saying anything you will not receive. For example, take the following five scriptures on what God says about you and money:

Luke 10:19 - Behold! I give you authority and power to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the ability of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means harm you.

Matthew 18:18 - assuredly I say to you: whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

John 10:10 - .... I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 - but my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 8:9 - for you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ that, though He was rich, yet for our sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might be rich.

The financial blessing will not come on you automatically. If you are waiting for money, or for a physical healing, you will be waiting a very long time. You need to talk to the devil about it:

Devil, I am supposed to be living the abundant life, according to God's Word in John 10:10. Satan, I take authority over you according to Luke 10:19 for Jesus has given it to me. He says in Matthew 18:18 that I can bind you; therefore, I am binding you up so you cannot come against my money. I command you to turn my money LOOSE, in Jesus' name! Amen.

You also need to speak to the money God has for you. Speak to it so that it will come into existence:

I command my money to come to me, more than enough to pay all my bills and live the abundant life, and thousands and thousands of dollars left over to spread the gospel. Money - COMETH to me NOW! Amen.

Then you need to thank God for it. Thank Him as if you already had it in your hand, because if God has spoken it, then it is a 'done deal'! God wants to be thanked, He deserves your thanksgiving and praise. How do you feel when you give a gift to your children or grandchildren and they don't even say thank you, just grab it and run? This is where the rubber meets the road, as they say. Is God God? Is God YOUR God? Is He a good God? YES!

Psalm 35:27b - . . . let the Lord be magnified who takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.

Receive from God

God is a GOOD God! God is a creating God and He creates with His Word. God's creative power is still working just like it was in the beginning of time when He said, "Light - BE" and light was. His Word spoken from your mouth and conceived in your heart becomes a spiritual force releasing His ability inside you!

James 3:5-6, 8 - So also, the tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do. A tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is full of wickedness that can ruin your whole life. It can turn the entire course of your life into a blazing flame of destruction, for it is set on fire by hell itself.... but no one can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrollable evil, full of deadly poison.

James 1:26 - If you claim to be religious but don't control your tongue, you are just fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.

The words you speak will either put you over in life or hold you in bondage. Many people are held captive in their circumstances by their own words. This works whether you are born-again or not. Put yourself in a position to receive God's best for you by speaking His Word.

Matthew 12:37 - For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

Man was created in the image of God and in His likeness. When God breathed into Adam the breath of life, creative power flowed out of the mouth of God and into Adam. The Bible declares that God gave them dominion over the earth. But Adam (both male and female) sinned and gave that authority over to satan. Jesus got that authority back by going to the cross.

The name Adam, by the way, means "earth" and was the name by which God called both the male and the female in the garden of Eden; the female was not called Eve until after they were expelled from there. "Man" is an all-encompassing word denoting all of mankind - of both sexes, all ages and all colors.

God's Word is as powerful today as it was the day He spoke it. In Genesis 1, it says, "....God created the heavens and the earth...." What did God use to create them? Words. Hebrews ll:3 states, "through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

You cannot see words with your physical eyes. You cannot see faith with your physical eyes. But the words God spoke formed our universe and set it in motion. The universe is still obeying His commands - the words which God spoke. And that includes you and everything around you!

Mark 11:23-24 - For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

You need to speak to whatever "mountain" is in your way. You need to use God's faith and God's Words, and it WILL move.

But Jesus doesn't just tell us to speak to our mountains. He is also saying to watch what we say all the time because you have the authority to bring what you say to pass - good or bad. One translation says, "he shall have whatever he is saying". In other words, if you keep saying, I don't have any money, and you say it and say it, because thats what you think about all the time - you are NEVER going to have any money.

Henry Ford, the inventor of the automobile, once said, "whether you think you can or you think you can't - you're right." Its true. How you think of yourself influences how you speak. What you think about all the time will fill your heart and will eventually find its way out of your mouth! And what you say to yourself and what you say to others about yourself and your circumstances affects your life.

What have you been saying about your children? What have you been saying about your grandchildren? What have you been saying about your health and your finances? It's one thing to hear bad reports from others but for you to agree with them will bring results you may not like.

If you have been speaking the wrong thing, its time to stop whining about where you've been and start thinking about where you can be. Yesterday ended last night! Forget your past - you will always find someone with a worse one - and go forward.

Find where it's written in God's Word about your situation. Write it down. Meditate on it. Talk about it. Think about it. Let it be the first thing you see when you get up in the morning and the last thing when you go to bed at night. Read it when you are in the bathroom. Think about it when you take a shower. Keep it in your purse.

Remember that faith brings God on the scene but fear allows the devil a foothold. Speak words of faith, words that God has said about you - He really meant it! Confess, acknowledge, agree with what God has said about you - it will come to pass!
